Volume counts unit cubes filling three-dimensional space. Every length conversion acts in three independent directions, so the conversion factor must be multiplied by itself three times.
One cubic metre is one million cubic centimetres
A one-metre cube becomes 100 cm by 100 cm by 100 cm. Multiplication gives 1,000,000 cm³, not 100 or 10,000. Applying only a linear or square factor is the most common conversion error.
Millilitres and litres have exact cubic definitions
NIST identifies one millilitre with one cubic centimetre and one litre with one cubic decimetre. Therefore 1 L = 1,000 cm³ = 0.001 m³ exactly; no measured density or fluid assumption enters that unit conversion.
