Square base times height divided by three

Square pyramid volume calculator

Use base side and perpendicular height; slant height is not substituted.

Square pyramid volume formula

V = base area × perpendicular height ÷ 3 = a²h ÷ 3

a is one side of the square base, so its area is a × a. h is the perpendicular height from the base plane to the apex, not the slant height along a face.

Example: base side 6 and height 5

The base area is 6 × 6 = 36. Then 36 × 5 ÷ 3 = 60 cubic units.

Check the one-third factor and units

A square prism with the same base and height has volume 36 × 5 = 180, so the pyramid is one third: 60. Use the same length unit for a and h; the result uses that unit cubed.
